Story’s public mainnet and native IP token launched on February 13, 2025. The Iliad and Odyssey testnets, badge snapshots and social tasks in this 2024 guide are over. Story’s Day 1 rewards portal stayed open for 30 days, so it is no longer a live claim route.
Completing old PiperX, Wand, Verio, Taya, Intract or other badge tasks now cannot retroactively change a 2025 snapshot. Story has said its broader Initial Incentives program can include later rounds, but each round has separate official terms; there is no perpetual reward for replaying the archived checklist.
Safety warning: Do not connect to
mint.story.foundationor a third-party “badge checker” because this old guide linked it. Start atstory.foundationand follow the current rewards or ecosystem navigation. A page asking for a seed phrase, payment to release an allocation, or unlimited token approval is not a legitimate claim.
Story rewards status in 2026
| Old activity | Current status |
|---|---|
| Iliad public testnet faucet and IP mint | Ended; Story now has a live public mainnet |
| Odyssey badge program | Snapshot-era activity used for initial eligibility; not open-ended farming |
| PiperX Phase 2 snapshot | Passed on December 7, 2024 |
| Third-party badge and social quests | Historical; old links and referral parameters are disabled below |
| Day 1 Story Rewards claim | Opened February 13, 2025 for 30 days and is closed |
| Future Initial Incentives | Possible only under a separately announced, current campaign with its own criteria |
Story allocated 10% of the initial IP supply to Initial Incentives. Half was designated for direct claims, including Day 1 and possible later campaigns, and half for distributions through ecosystem projects. This allocation does not promise that every testnet user, badge holder or application user will receive tokens.
What is Story Protocol?
Story is an EVM-compatible proof-of-stake layer 1 built for registering and licensing intellectual property. Its architecture combines a modified Cosmos SDK and CometBFT consensus layer with a Geth-based execution layer. Protocol modules represent IP relationships, licensing terms, royalties and disputes on-chain.
An IP Asset is an on-chain record and account linked to an NFT representation of a work or right. Registration makes the record programmable, but it cannot turn material a registrant does not own into lawful intellectual property.
What the IP token does
IP is the network’s native asset. It is used to pay gas, stake or delegate to validators, and participate in network economics. The launch tokenomics set an initial supply of one billion IP.
Story’s staking rules differ from Ethereum’s. Current documentation specifies a minimum 1,024 IP delegation, a 14-day unbonding period, and a 1 IP fee for unstaking. Fixed-period staking may prevent unstaking until maturity, and validator behavior can expose delegated stake to slashing. Users should read the exact current staking transaction rather than infer safety from an advertised yield.
August 2026 IP token unlock update
In February 2026, Story announced a six-month delay for all already-locked team, investor and insider tokens. The published schedule moved the initial unlock from February 13 to August 13, 2026—the date of this article update—without changing total allocations or legal ownership.
An unlock means tokens become eligible to enter circulation under the vesting schedule; it does not prove that every unlocked token is immediately transferred or sold. Story also states that circulating impact depends on staking and holder behavior. Readers should check the official tokenomics page for any schedule change published after this review.
How Story’s IP licensing works
Story’s Programmable IP License (PIL) is an off-chain legal template based on U.S. copyright law whose selectable terms are mapped to protocol contracts. An owner can attach terms covering commercial use, derivatives, attribution, fees and revenue share; a licensee can mint a License Token representing those selected rights.
Important limits remain:
- Story is not a government copyright registry and does not replace courts or arbitration.
- The wallet registering an asset may not be the real-world rights holder.
- A timestamp proves that data was submitted at a time; it does not independently prove authorship or ownership.
- On-chain royalty logic can automate payments that pass through supported contracts, but it cannot force every off-chain sale to settle on-chain.
- Legal enforceability, remedies and ownership disputes depend on facts and jurisdiction.
- Publicly registering confidential or unreleased material can expose metadata or content permanently, depending on storage choices.
Only register material you have authority to license, choose terms carefully, and get qualified legal advice for valuable rights. License terms can be immutable once attached.
Story mainnet risks
- Validator and staking risk: downtime, slashing, commission changes and lock or unbonding periods.
- Protocol and governance risk: upgradeable contracts, Security Council powers, bugs and emergency actions.
- Application risk: an ecosystem app can be exploited even when the base network continues working.
- IP-rights risk: false registration, infringement disputes, incompatible licenses and uncertain cross-border enforcement.
- Token risk: inflation, scheduled unlocks, market liquidity and custody can affect IP independently of network usage.
- Bridge risk: moving IP or other assets across chains adds bridge contracts and operational assumptions.
- Scam risk: fake reward portals, badge pages, token contracts and support accounts target old campaign participants.
Story reported extensive pre-mainnet audits and a post-launch bug bounty, but audits are not guarantees. Its January 2026 governance-security description also documents active administrator, timelock and Security Council roles that users should understand.
How to verify a new Story incentive
- Find the announcement on
story.foundationrather than a repost or direct message. - Confirm the campaign start, end, eligible jurisdictions, snapshot and claim deadline.
- Navigate to the portal from that announcement and compare its domain exactly.
- Check the network, IP token contract or native-asset context, and transaction instructions.
- Never pay someone to “fix” a Sybil flag or sell guaranteed eligibility.
- Use a separate low-value wallet for experimental applications and revoke unneeded approvals afterward.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Story Protocol airdrop still claimable?
The Day 1 Story Rewards portal opened on February 13, 2025 for 30 days and is closed. A later incentive would be a separate campaign with new official terms.
Can I still earn the initial reward by using the Iliad testnet?
No. Iliad and Odyssey concluded before mainnet. New testnet activity cannot be added to their old snapshots.
What is the Story IP token used for?
IP is the native gas and staking asset of Story Network and participates in its token economy. It is not a copyright certificate or equity in PIP Labs.
What was the initial IP token supply?
Story announced an initial supply of one billion IP, with separate allocations and vesting schedules described in its launch tokenomics.
When do Story team and investor tokens begin unlocking?
Story's February 2026 update moved the scheduled initial unlock for already-locked team, investor and insider tokens to August 13, 2026. An unlock does not mean every token is immediately sold.
How much IP is required for native staking?
Story's current protocol documentation specifies a minimum 1,024 IP stake or delegation, with a 14-day unbonding process and a 1 IP unstaking fee.
Does registering IP on Story prove legal ownership?
It creates an on-chain record, but the chain cannot independently determine whether the registrant owns the real-world rights. Ownership and infringement can still require off-chain evidence and legal proceedings.
What is the Programmable IP License?
The PIL is an off-chain legal license template based on U.S. copyright law whose selectable terms are mapped to Story's on-chain licensing contracts.
Are Story royalties guaranteed?
No. Protocol contracts can automate supported on-chain revenue flows, but off-chain revenue, inaccurate reporting, infringement, application failure and legal enforcement remain risks.
What are the main Story Protocol risks?
Risks include validator slashing, contract and governance failures, false IP registration, license disputes, token unlock and liquidity effects, bridge exploits and fake reward portals.
